Martin Unwin - Bon-Tag - Security marking bonsai trees, September 2015.
Martin told us that, not only was he interested in bonsai, he was also interested in motor bikes! When security tags were invented to protect motor bikes, he started to think about how he could protect his bonsai trees. He realised that the microchips that are routinely injected into pets could also be injected into the trunks of bonsai trees to prove the ownership of bonsai trees that had been lost or stolen. He demonstrated on his own tree that it was impossible to detect where the chip was inserted, but it could easily be read by a scanner that police use regularly to scan pets and stolen property.
Martin demonstrated first on this garden centre cedar deodar above just how easy it is to drill a small hole into the trunk, insert a microchip the size of a grain of rice and fill in the hole invisibly. The kits he produces contain everything needed to treat one, five or ten trees, containing the tag, instructions, ID code, site warning label and mounting plaque. When the tag is in place, you should register and create a free account with The UK National Property Register.
Martin sells his kits at events such as RHS Tatton Show and information can be
obtained on his website: www.bon-tag.com or email: info@bon-tag.com
