John started by showing us the slate and the conifers he was going to plant on the slate after it was modified.
He donned safety goggles and clipped carefully at the edges of the slate until he had formed a pleasant curved shape.
Next, he prepared the clay by rolling it and applied it to the slate, following the shape. Wire was added to position the conifers.
The trees were planted in compost and wired in, with a large tree near the centre and the other trees grouped behind and laid out in varied distances to give a natural forest effect.
